Chapter Twenty

We had changed things up. The big group of the past days was meeting without me, Asif and Merlin. The three of us were meeting together in a separate room. Maybe they would come up with other ideas that we had not. Frankly I was getting tired of all the talk and wanted to go get it done. Luckily, I had smarter friends that thought ahead and made good plans. Meanwhile, the three of us were taking a break from thinking about big things like how to stay alive.

“Hey Merlin, when we get to the promised land, how are you going to travel? As you are or do you have a wizard trick to make a magic carpet or something?”

“Despite your primitive knowledge of wizards, I don’t know of a single one that piloted a magic carpet. I have no reason to begin, since I can shapeshift into just about any form of my choosing. I thought that information was included in all the myths about me.”

I looked over at Asif. “I didn’t know that; did you know that?”

He shook his head. “Not really. I think I read about it in one of the old legend’s books, but I didn’t think it was true.”

“It is true. I often used animal forms, whether birds or forest creatures, to spy on my enemies. Also, to travel quickly if I wasn’t carrying anything.”

“Huh, how about that,” I said. “Asif, how do you plan to get around?”

“As you know, Guardians don’t shift. I will go as I am.”

“That won’t be optimal considering the places we need to get into,” I said. “Definitely not for getting across the Atlantic and more than half of America. Merlin, can you change him into a gnat or something?”

“What, make him more annoying than he is? Surely not.”

“You guys are both funny. Now that you have that out of your systems, perhaps we should get serious about how I will move long distances without being able to shift.”

“When you use the field you Guardians have to protect yourself, does that change travel in any way?”

“Not much. It makes travel more effortless, so I can walk much farther, but I can’t fly or go underwater very long.”

“Merlin, do you have anything?”

“I’m not sure. Asif, can you redirect the field to do anything else besides push a bubble of time and space around you? For example, send energy outside the field?

“I do not know because I never experimented with it much. But my father would likely know.”

“Good idea. Let’s get Michael in here and figure out something. Or it’s back to making you a magical gnat.”

We had a coffee after Asif sent a mental request to Michael, via whatever communication system the Guardians used. He would come to our room when the larger group took a break.

“Asif, while we wait for Michael, I have a question for you. When we were leaving the Sky Lord’s time travel facility and those guards hit us with the lasers, why didn’t you shield
